Successful Entrepreneurs are a rare breed of people. While the glory of a finished diamond attracts many people to it, not many will respect the stone in its raw form, and that is precisely why succeeding independently is so difficult – not many people will stand by in the beginning phase when support is really needed. That is truer if the entrepreneur is female and more so if the story is set at the beginning of the last century!

Looking back at the success stories of the last century, one lady stands out like a beacon – Madam C J Walker. According to the Guinness Book, Madam Walker was the first woman to have become a millionaire through her own efforts, and that is no mean achievement! Born of slave parents, Madam Walker, or Sarah Breedlove as she was born, started her career working as a laundress for a dollar and a half a day. She later became a saleswoman for a range of hair care products, but was unhappy with the quality of what she sold. That is what led her to launch The Madam C J Walker Manufacturing Company, and ‘Wonderful Hair Grower’ was her first big successful product. She also founded the Leila Colleges of Beauty Culture, named after her daughter.

Success came to her big time, and she amassed a lot of wealth over the years. However, what truly sets apart the story of Madam C J Walker is the way she handled that wealth. Over two-thirds of her estate has been given over to charitable causes, and even today, there are a range of philanthropic causes the estate supports. Another path-breaking thing Madam Walker did was to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship in young African-American women in the USA, when the times were not suitable for them. A significant number of sales people in her company were women, and that was unheard of at that time. From that team of women rose many more women entrepreneurs, and they scripted their own success stories with inspiration from Madam Walker.

Madam C J Walker died in 1919, but her legacy lives on – both in the form of her organizations, and in the form of the inspiration she gave to a whole generation of women

My birthday was a few months ago – one that most people consider one of the pivotal ones.  It was definitely an interesting mental and emotional turning point for me.  It is amazing how time flies and how we often feel that we have all of the time in the world to go certain places, do certain things, and tell the important people in our lives how much they mean to us.  I have two aunts that have suffered strokes over the past 6 months and an uncle who developed terminal cancer and recently died as a result of his disease.  While my aunts are doing better and getting stronger on a daily basis, it does make you think – tomorrow is not promised.

Which made me ask myself the question:

If I were to die tomorrow, what would my life have meant?

Would the world have been a better place because I was here?

Have you ever stopped from your daily grind long enough to honestly ask yourself that question? It was definitely an eye opener for me..and if you haven’t taken the time yet – I encourage you to do so!

We all have a purpose.  A reason why we were born.  A reason why were born into a certain family and a reason that we have had certain experiences  in life.

It is up to us to take every day that we have been given above ground and make it the best day possible.  Unfortunately, too many of us are caught up in the rat race of corporate America, chasing that perpetual piece of cheese for 40 years and retiring with little to nothing to show for it.  As a result of this, we cannot be a true blessing to others because we are spending so much of our life battling to just maintain a halfway comfortable lifestyle.  A lot of you do not have the luxury of thinking about what you want to do with your life or what your passion is, because you are stuck in survival mode. There has got to be a better way…

You can achieve all of your dreams.  You can fulfill God’s purpose for your life.  You can a have real joy and passion for life.  But you cannot do that if your broke.
